Where did the first hammock come from?

The hammock goes back many centuries and it is known to have been in use as early as 450 BC. Who exactly invented or designed the very first hammock is not known, but it definitely has a Spanish connection as the word hammock is derived from the Spanish word Hamaca or Hamac which means fish net. Christopher Columbus is said to have introduced the hammock to Europe around 1700. In their early days, hammocks were constructed made out of tree bark sisal leaves. The reason why it became very popular in early times was because it provided effective protection to the occupier from deadly insects and animal bites especially in hostile terrains like the jungles. By being suspended above the ground and with a net like design, hammocks provided good air circulation and kept people sufficiently cool in hot humid climates.

The present day hammocks

Today's hammocks are made out of fabrics like cotton, polyester, nylon, canvas, and even silk. Along with the many fabrics now in use to make hammocks, the design too has undergone significant improvement. You now have quilted hammocks, camping hammocks, hammock chairs, hammock swings, reversible hammocks, rope hammocks, hammocks with stands, double hammocks and many more styles.

Hammocks come in varied styles

Hammocks come in many materials, designs and sizes. The most popular ones used widely around the world include:

Fabric Hammock - Fabric hammocks are extremely stable and comfortable. They are available in a range of colors. The fabric makes sure that there are no ropes poking into your body to make you uncomfortable. Little children can use them safely.

Brazilian hammocks – These are made from thick soft cotton cloth and are very comfortable and sturdy.

Rope hammocks – The rope hammock is as the name suggests, made from rope. These ropes provide support to the occupier’s body. The cotton or nylon rope used in their construction is very strong and can easily take the weight of any person. The space between the ropes allows good air circulation making these ideal for a warm summer day.

Portable hammocks - A portable hammock is easily collapsible and doesn’t need a separate stand. It can be a classic simple design to a hammock chair. You can easily set it up between a couple of trees.

Camping hammocks - These hammocks meet the specific needs of hikers and campers, and are actually a portable hammock with a few extras features. A camping hammock is usually made of waterproof material and comes with a canopy attachment. Camping hammocks are light weight, easy to fold and east to carry. Some also come with netting to provide protection against insects.

Mayan hammocks - The design of Mayan hammocks is very unique. A multi-colored dyed string is woven in diamond pattern to make these hammocks. When you lie on one, it’s like lying on soft sponge.

Hammock Chairs - If you are short on space hammock chairs are just the thing for you. Hammock chairs are as comfortable and relaxing as their lounging cousins. You don’t even need a hanging mechanism or space to hang these.
